What is the difference between measuring gloss and measuring colour?
Gloss measures the specular reflection of light on a surface, whilst colour analyses chromatic perception. Two samples can be exactly the same colour yet have completely different gloss levels.
What materials can be analysed with a gloss meter?
It is commonly used to measure gloss on paints, varnishes, plastics, metallic surfaces, lacquered wood, industrial coatings, inks and decorative materials.
What factors can cause a loss of gloss in a paint or coating?
Factors such as poor application, insufficient curing, surface contamination, degradation due to UV radiation, moisture or mechanical wear can significantly reduce the gloss of a surface.
Why are different measurement angles such as 20°, 60° and 85° used?
Each angle is optimised for different levels of gloss. Typically, 60° is used as a general reference, 20° for high-gloss surfaces and 85° for matt or low-gloss finishes.
